Poem – Bipolar please leave us be

A poem I just wrote on my feelings of the effects of bipolar on my loved ones and my life. I don’t see it as a blessing. It’s devastating.

Bipolar please set us free.

Countless times I’ve rebuilt my life
Bipolar please leave us be
You creep back in unexpected, uninvited
Battles for all to see

Our lives again stolen right at your hand
Bipolar please leave us be
Robbing our lives, our choices, our voices
Confused I unwittingly flee

We battle a while and win as do you
Bipolar please leave us be
Life that had colour returns back to black
Bad thoughts can take over you see

Thoughts become acts that devastate all
Bipolar please leave us be
In hospital I wake, loved ones sit at my side
Wondering what future may be

The fear, the shame, temporarily insane
Bipolar please leave us be
Not everyone understands, pure “selfish” I am
Which serves to perpetuate more pain

Rock bottom has hit, more climbing to muster
Bipolar please leave us be
Endangering life, the fight becomes harder
Loved ones wondering again “can we trust her?”

Each time more afraid to leave me alone
Bipolar please leave us be
Please let us go we just want to be free
We fear for my life with a safety unknown

My family, finances, house, job at stake
Bipolar please leave us be
We cannot, and must not, lose it all to you
How much do you want us to take?

Each time it gets harder to put back together
Bipolar please leave us be
Not all understand, stigma follows around
A life sentence forever you see

My children deserve happy young memories
Bipolar please leave us be
Aside from myself, our concern is for them
Please can you set us all free.

We please beg you please, please, please let us be.

  1. Your poem really conveys the anguish and distress felt by bipolar sufferers and those close to them, and how bipolar affects all aspects of one’s life. I hope that writing it has helped you in some way.
